Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA)
Location: Bolton Contract Type: Full-time Salary: Day Rate - 100.42 - 105.00
Job Purpose
The HLTA will work under the guidance of teaching staff and within an agreed system of supervision to complement teachers' delivery of the national curriculum. They will take responsibility for learning activities, including planning, preparing, and delivering lessons to individuals, small groups, and occasionally whole classes.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching & Learning Support
- Deliver planned lessons and learning activities under teacher guidance.
- Lead interventions for literacy, numeracy, and other curriculum areas.
- Support pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and implement individual education plans.
- Use assessment data to monitor progress and adapt support strategies.
Classroom Management
- Supervise whole classes during teacher absence, ensuring a safe and productive learning environment.
- Manage pupil behaviour in line with school policies.
Planning & Assessment
- Assist in planning and preparing resources for lessons.
- Support teachers with marking and recording pupil progress.
- Provide feedback to pupils and contribute to reports for parents and staff.
Pastoral & Safeguarding
- Promote pupils' emotional well-being and positive attitudes to learning.
- Ensure safeguarding procedures are followed at all times.
Essential Requirements
- HLTA status
- Minimum Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification (or equivalent).
- GCSEs in English and Maths (Grade C/4 or above).
- Proven experience supporting teaching and learning in a school setting.
Desirable Experience
- Cover supervision experience.
- SEN support and differentiated instruction.
- Knowledge of behaviour management strategies.
- Familiarity with assessment and progress tracking.

- Experience
- Previous TA experience: At least 1-2 years as a Teaching Assistant or Learning Support Assistant. Classroom management: Ability to lead small groups and occasionally cover whole classes. Supporting SEN: Experience working with pupils with Special Educational Needs. Curriculum support: Familiarity with planning and delivering interventions.
