SEN 1:1 Teaching Assistant
Position Overview:
We are seeking a compassionate, patient, and proactive SEN 1:1 Teaching Assistant to provide dedicated support to a pupil with Special Educational Needs (SEN) in a mainstream primary school setting. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful difference in a child's educational journey by offering tailored support that promotes learning, emotional well-being, and independence.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Pupil Support:
- Provide 1:1 support to a pupil with identified SEN, ensuring their individual needs are met throughout the school day.
- Assist with the implementation of the pupil's Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), working towards specific learning and developmental targets.
- Support the pupil's emotional regulation, social interaction, and engagement in classroom activities.
- Use appropriate strategies and resources to support learning, including visual aids, sensory tools, and structured routines.
Classroom Support:
- Work closely with the class teacher to adapt and differentiate learning materials and activities.
- Encourage the pupil's participation in whole-class, group, and individual tasks.
- Monitor and record progress, behaviours, and achievements, reporting regularly to the SENCO and class teacher.
- Support transitions between activities and environments to ensure consistency and reduce anxiety.
Collaboration & Communication:
- Liaise with teachers, SENCO, parents/carers, and external professionals to ensure a coordinated approach to support.
- Attend relevant meetings and contribute to reviews of the pupil's progress and support strategies.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
Safeguarding & Welfare:
- Promote the pupil's safety, well-being, and inclusion within the school community.
- Follow school safeguarding policies and procedures, reporting concerns promptly and appropriately.
Person Specification:
Essential:
- A nurturing and patient approach, with a genuine interest in supporting children with additional needs.
- Ability to build positive, trusting relationships with pupils and staff.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures.
Preferable Experience:
- Previous experience providing 1:1 support to children with SEN, particularly Autism, ADHD, or emotional and behavioural needs.
- Familiarity with EHCPs and individualised learning plans.
- Experience using visual timetables, sensory resources, or communication tools such as PECS or Makaton.
- Training in emotional regulation strategies, de-escalation techniques, or therapeutic approaches.
Qualifications:
- Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification (or equivalent) is highly desirable.
- SEN-specific training or experience.
- Enhanced DBS clearance (or willingness to obtain one).
- Safeguarding training (Level 1 or 2).
