Sensory & Communication SEN Teaching Assistant - Merton SM4
Are you a patient, caring and experienced SEN Teaching Assistant with a passion for supporting children with sensory and communication needs?
We are recruiting for a Sensory & Communication SEN Teaching Assistant to join a specialist school in the Merton SM4 area, supporting pupils with severe and complex learning difficulties.
The school supports pupils aged 3-19 with PMLD, Autism, physical disabilities, sensory impairments and complex health needs.
This role would suit someone who understands that communication can look different for every child and is confident using sensory, visual and alternative communication approaches to encourage engagement and development.
The Role
As a SEN Teaching Assistant, you will:
Provide 1:1 and small-group support.
Support pupils with communication, sensory and complex learning needs.
Use sensory activities to encourage engagement and interaction.
Support pupils who are non-verbal or have limited verbal communication.
Use appropriate visual and alternative communication strategies.
Support social interaction, emotional regulation and independence.
Assist with personalised and sensory-based learning activities.
Support pupils with PMLD, Autism and physical disabilities.
Assist with personal care and mobility where required.
Follow individual EHCPs, care plans and communication programmes.
Work alongside teachers, Speech and Language Therapists and other professionals.
Help maintain a safe, calm and engaging learning environment.
Who We're Looking For
The ideal candidate will have:
Experience supporting children or young people with SEN or complex needs.
Experience supporting non-verbal pupils or children with communication difficulties is highly desirable.
Understanding of sensory processing and individual communication needs.
A patient, nurturing and highly adaptable approach.
Strong observation and relationship-building skills.
Confidence supporting pupils with significant additional needs.
Experience within a specialist school, SEN provision, care or support setting would be beneficial.
Valid Child and Adult DBS essential.
Experience with Makaton, PECS, AAC, communication aids, intensive interaction or sensory approaches would be particularly beneficial.
You don't necessarily need a formal teaching qualification. If you have hands-on experience supporting children with communication, sensory or complex needs, we'd like to hear from you.
