Title: Pastoral Mentor
The Role:
Support pupils to overcome barriers to learning, develop positive relationships, build confidence and achieve their full potential. As a Pastoral Mentor, you will work closely with teachers, the SENCO, pastoral teams, safeguarding staff, families and external professionals to provide consistent, individualised support. The role will involve working with pupils who may experience social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs, anxiety, low confidence, behavioural difficulties, ADHD, autism, communication difficulties or challenges engaging with education. You will provide one-to-one and small-group support, help pupils regulate their emotions and behaviour, and encourage positive engagement with school.
Key Responsibilities
- Build positive, trusting and professional relationships with pupils, acting as a consistent and supportive adult within the school environment.
- Provide targeted 1:1 and small-group support for pupils experiencing SEMH needs, anxiety, behavioural difficulties, low confidence or barriers to learning. Support pupils with needs including autism, ADHD, communication and interaction difficulties, learning difficulties and social, emotional and mental health needs.
- Help pupils develop emotional regulation, resilience, confidence, self-esteem and positive coping strategies.
- Promote positive behaviour and encourage pupils to make appropriate choices in line with school policies and expectations.
- Work collaboratively with teachers, the SENCO, pastoral staff and senior leaders to implement effective support strategies and individual support plans.
- Support pupils during lessons, break times, lunch, transitions and other aspects of the school day where additional pastoral support is required.
- Encourage positive attendance, punctuality and engagement with education, working with relevant staff to address barriers to attendance.
- Support pupils who may be struggling to access the curriculum due to emotional, behavioural or social difficulties. While monitoring pupils' behaviour, well-being, engagement and progress, providing clear feedback to relevant teaching and pastoral staff.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of pastoral interventions, incidents, pupil progress and concerns in accordance with school policies. Recognise and respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns, following school safeguarding procedures and reporting concerns to the designated safeguarding lead.
- Communicate professionally with parents/carers and relevant professionals where appropriate, contributing to a consistent approach to pupil support.
- Promote safeguarding, inclusion, equality and high expectations for all pupils.
Requirements
- Level 2 English and Maths (GCSE grade 4/C or Functional Skills).
- Previous experience working with children or young people in a school, education, youth work, care, pastoral or support setting.
- Experience supporting pupils with SEMH, behavioural difficulties or additional needs is highly desirable.
- A calm, patient and empathetic approach with the ability to build strong relationships with young people.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively as part of a wider school team.
- The ability to remain calm and professional when supporting pupils experiencing challenging emotions or behaviours.
- An understanding of safeguarding and the importance of maintaining professional boundaries.
- Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is mandatory. (We can help advise on this.)
