SEMH Teaching Assistant - Specialist School - Hounslow
Are you a confident, resilient and emotionally intelligent Teaching Assistant with experience supporting children and young people with SEMH and challenging behaviour?
We are currently recruiting for an SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a specialist school in Hounslow, supporting pupils who require additional emotional, behavioural and educational support.
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who understands that working with SEMH pupils requires patience, consistency, strong boundaries and excellent relationship-building skills.
You will be supporting pupils who may have experienced difficulties in education, family circumstances or previous settings. The successful candidate will be able to remain calm under pressure, build trust and help pupils re-engage with education.
The Role
As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will:
Provide 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with SEMH and additional needs.
Support pupils both within the classroom and across the wider school environment.
Build positive and trusting relationships with pupils who may have barriers to learning.
Support pupils with emotional regulation, confidence, resilience and social development.
Help pupils manage difficult emotions and develop positive coping strategies.
Support learning by encouraging pupils to engage, participate and develop independence.
Manage challenging behaviour using positive behaviour support and de-escalation strategies.
Maintain clear and consistent boundaries while developing positive relationships.
Support pupils during lessons, break times, interventions and activities.
Work closely with teachers, pastoral staff, SENCOs and other professionals.
Follow individual behaviour, safeguarding and support plans.
Monitor and record pupil behaviour, wellbeing and progress.
Help maintain a calm, safe and structured environment.
Who We're Looking For
We're particularly interested in candidates who have:
Strong experience working with children or young people with SEMH or challenging behaviour.
Experience within specialist schools, PRUs, alternative provision, youth work, residential care, behaviour support or similar settings.
Confidence supporting pupils who may display challenging or dysregulated behaviour.
A calm and consistent approach when dealing with difficult situations.
Strong de-escalation and behaviour management skills.
Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities.
The resilience to work in a demanding but highly rewarding environment.
The ability to establish appropriate boundaries while building trusting relationships.
A patient, empathetic and emotionally intelligent approach.
Valid Child and Adult DBS essential.
Experience in youth work, sports coaching, mentoring, residential care, support work, counselling or other roles involving vulnerable young people would be highly desirable.
You don't necessarily need previous experience as a Teaching Assistant. If you have strong experience supporting young people with behavioural, emotional or social difficulties, we would be keen to hear from you.
