About the Role

Support pupils with special educational needs to access high-quality learning, develop confidence and achieve their full potential. As an SEN Cover Teacher, you will provide effective teaching and classroom support across a range of subjects and year groups, ensuring pupils continue to receive a consistent and engaging education in the absence of their usual teacher. The role will involve working closely with teaching staff, the SENCO, support staff and pastoral teams to deliver planned lessons and activities, adapt learning to meet individual needs and maintain a safe, positive and inclusive classroom environment. You may work across specialist SEN schools, alternative provisions or mainstream schools with SEND provisions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality lessons and learning activities in the absence of the regular class teacher.
  • Support pupils with a range of special educational needs, including autism, ADHD, communication and interaction difficulties, learning difficulties and social, emotional and mental health needs.
  • Follow lesson plans and school schemes of work while adapting activities and resources to meet individual pupils' needs.
  • Establish positive relationships with pupils and create a calm, safe and inclusive learning environment.
  • Use appropriate classroom management strategies to promote positive behaviour, engagement and learning.
  • Provide appropriate 1:1 and small-group support to pupils who require additional assistance during lessons.
  • Differentiate learning activities and provide appropriate levels of challenge and support.
  • Work collaboratively with Teaching Assistants, SEN staff, the SENCO and wider school teams to ensure pupils receive consistent support.
  • Support pupils with EHCPs and individual support plans by implementing appropriate strategies and reasonable adjustments.
  • Monitor pupils' engagement, behaviour, progress and well-being, providing clear feedback to relevant teaching staff.
  • Support pupils during lessons, transitions, break times, lunch and other aspects of the school day where required.
  • Encourage pupils to develop independence, confidence, communication skills and positive attitudes towards learning.
  • Respond appropriately to challenging behaviour and emotional needs, following school policies and individual behaviour support plans.
  • Maintain a positive and professional classroom environment, ensuring school expectations and routines are consistently followed.
  • Complete appropriate classroom records and provide feedback following lessons where required.
  • Maintain high standards of safeguarding, confidentiality, health and safety and professional conduct.
  • Build positive and professional relationships with pupils, colleagues and other school staff.
  • Promote safeguarding, inclusion, equality and high expectations for all pupils.
  • Requirements

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is desirable, although experienced unqualified teachers, instructors and suitable education professionals may also be considered depending on the role.
  • Previous experience teaching or supporting children and young people within an SEN, mainstream or alternate provision setting.
  • Experience working with pupils with additional needs such as autism, ADHD, SEMH, communication difficulties or learning difficulties is highly desirable.
  • Strong classroom management skills and the ability to establish positive relationships with pupils.
  • The ability to adapt teaching and learning approaches to meet a range of individual needs.
  • A calm, patient and flexible approach with the ability to respond effectively to changing situations.
  • Strong communication and organisational skills, with the ability to work effectively as part of a wider school team.
  • A commitment to safeguarding, inclusion and providing high-quality educational experiences for all pupils.
