SEMH Teaching Assistant | 1:1 Support

Are you an experienced and resilient SEMH Teaching Assistant looking to make a real difference in a young person's life?

We are recruiting for a dedicated SEMH Teaching Assistant to support a secondary-aged student on a 1:1 basis within a welcoming and inclusive school in Brent. This rewarding role is ideal for individuals with experience supporting students with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, Special Educational Needs (SEN), behavioural challenges, autism (ASC), ADHD, or emotional regulation difficulties.

As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will play a vital role in helping a student overcome barriers to learning, develop positive behaviour strategies, and achieve both academic and personal success.

The Role

As a SEMH Teaching Assistant, your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing dedicated 1:1 support for a student with SEN and SEMH needs
  • Building positive, trusting relationships that encourage engagement and participation
  • Supporting behaviour management and emotional regulation using agreed intervention strategies
  • Assisting with learning activities both inside and outside the classroom
  • Working closely with teachers, SENCOs, pastoral teams, and external professionals
  • Promoting social skills, emotional wellbeing, and independence
  • Monitoring student progress and maintaining accurate records
  • Creating a safe, nurturing, and supportive learning environment
  • Supporting de-escalation strategies and positive behaviour interventions where required
  • The Ideal Candidate

    We are looking for an SEMH Teaching Assistant who:

  • Has experience supporting children or young people with SEMH, SEN, Autism (ASC), ADHD, behavioural needs, or emotional and mental health challenges
  • Demonstrates excellent behaviour management skills
  • Remains calm, patient, and resilient in challenging situations
  • Has strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • Is passionate about improving outcomes for vulnerable young people
  • Can work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary school team
  • Has previous experience as a Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant (LSA), Behaviour Mentor, Youth Worker, Support Worker, Care Worker, or similar role (desirable)
