Job Title: School Welfare Assistant - Part-Time
Location: Skelmersdale
Working Hours: Monday to Friday, 10:00am - 2:30pm (Term-Time Only)
Role Overview
We are seeking a caring, organised, and reliable School Welfare Assistant to join a specialist SEN school in Skelmersdale, supporting pupils with a range of additional needs. This rewarding role is focused on promoting the health, wellbeing, and medical needs of children throughout the school day. You will provide first aid, care for pupils who become unwell or injured, administer medication where appropriate, and work closely with staff, parents, and external professionals to ensure every child receives the highest standard of care in a safe, nurturing, and inclusive environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide first aid and basic medical care to pupils who become unwell or sustain minor injuries during the school day.
- Support pupils with complex medical needs and individual healthcare plans, ensuring all care is delivered safely and compassionately.
- Administer prescribed medication in accordance with school policies and procedures.
- Maintain accurate records of accidents, illnesses, medication, and welfare incidents.
- Liaise with parents/carers regarding pupil illness, injury, or ongoing medical needs.
- Work collaboratively with teachers, the SENCO, therapists, and other professionals to support pupils' overall wellbeing.
- Promote the physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing of pupils across the school.
- Monitor medical supplies and ensure first aid equipment is maintained and fully stocked.
- Support pupils with additional needs, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, and complex learning difficulties.
- Uphold the school's safeguarding policies and contribute to a positive, caring, and inclusive learning environment.
Requirements
- Previous experience working with children or young people in a school, SEN, healthcare, or welfare setting is desirable.
- Experience supporting pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) is advantageous.
- A current Paediatric or Emergency First Aid at Work qualification is desirable (or willingness to undertake training).
- A calm, compassionate, and patient approach when supporting children with a range of additional needs.
- Excellent communication, organisational, and record-keeping skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Understanding of safeguarding responsibilities within an educational setting.
- Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one.
