SEN Teaching Assistant - Autism & SEMH Location: Burnley, Lancashire Contract: Full-Time | Term-Time Only Setting: Independent Special School
Job Overview
We are recruiting a SEN Teaching Assistant to join a supportive independent special school in Burnley, working with pupils aged 7-16 (with some provision up to 19) who have autism and Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
The school provides a structured, nurturing environment where pupils benefit from personalised learning, strong staff relationships, and a focus on emotional wellbeing. Staff work collaboratively to create a calm, safe, and engaging setting that enables every young person to thrive.
Key Responsibilities
Provide 1:1 and small group support for pupils with autism and SEMH needs
Support access to learning through differentiated, sensory-informed strategies
Promote emotional regulation, resilience, and positive behaviour
Work towards EHCP targets alongside teachers and the wider support team
Help maintain a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment
Monitor, record, and report on pupil progress and behaviour
Support personal care and behavioural needs where required
Requirements
Experience working with children or young people with SEN, particularly autism and/or SEMH (essential)
Calm, patient, and empathetic approach
Ability to build strong, positive relationships
Strong teamwork skills
Level 2 or Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning qualification (desirable)
Willingness to support personal care needs
Enhanced DBS (or willingness to obtain)
