Veritas Education are recruiting a number of Cover Supervisors for Secondary Schools throughout KIRKLEES.
You need to be a strong character for this role to manage the classroom behaviour.
Cover supervisors were originally introduced as a way of maintaining teacher's non contact periods but have become a permanent fixture in schools. It can be a rewarding job and a useful way of getting experience in the classroom for those with teaching ambitions.
Daily Rate
The daily pay rate will be between £50 & £80 per day depending on your experience.
Hours
Cover Supervisors are usually in school during normal school hours, but because there isn't a need to plan/mark there's rarely the need to stay after school.
Cover supervisor duties
The cover supervisor's main job is to manage a classroom, ensuring that students remain on task with the work they have been set. Curiously, cover supervisors are often defined by what they don't do So, usually, cover supervisors:
- Don't plan
- Don't have subject knowledge
- Don't mark work
- Don't set homework
- Don't differentiate
- Don't set targets
However many of our cover supervisors report doing the following duties:
- Teaching grammar
- Managing behaviour
- Discussing and debating texts with pupils and answering questions
- Differentiating and allocating extension exercises.
Qualifications needed to become a cover supervisor
Veritas Education requires our Cover Supervisors to have an honours degree or equivalent as a minimum educational requirement and to have experience of working with young people.
Skills and knowledge
The following are desirable:
- Highly adaptable as there is no a regular timetable
- Have a thick skin
- Behaviour management skills
- Be diplomatic
The upsides
Everyday is different and its an excellent way to get into working in a school environment. Many of our Cover Supervisors go on to train as Teachers. As the majority of work is on a Day to Day basis, it can be very flexible and we see many Cover Supervisors working Part Time to suit themselves.
The downside
Because the work is usually on a day to day basis, its hard to guarantee work. There are usually a number of quiet periods throughout the school year, mainly at the end and beginning of a new term.
